I am a Vietnam veteran with PTSD. This piece is my Attempt to explain how PTSD affects the veteran's life and the lives of their children. To the veteran with PTSD, the Spector of battle never leaves him or her - he or she continues to wear battle armor in the form of psychological defenses - never lowering their guard, living with heightened anxiety, as well as depression. Without ever saying a word to them, some of their children will also be afflicted with secondary PTSD. The futures of those children with secondary PTSD will be limited - perhaps even shortened by their secondary PTSD. This is just one of the hidden, long term effects of war that is not being addressed by our nation.
A Call To Optimism and Hope Why is there so much hate and discontent in the world today? Although their origins are far from simple, we have an opportunity right now to improve our world by championing their opposites - optimism and hope.. How? - By telling jokes and stories, singing songs, acting. painting, and photographing the people and places focusing on these values. But be warned - I believe that social media, as well as mass media, are slowly sucking these values out of us as a people and a nation.
